Why Our Hearts Are in Healthcare

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. To prevent heart disease and increase awareness of its effects, First American Healthcare Finance is proudly participating in American Heart Month. Heart disease kills an estimated 630,000 Americans each year and is the leading cause of death for both men and women.
First American Healthcare Finance is committed to helping healthcare organizations provide the best care possible to their communities. Locally, First American participates in the Rochester Heart Walk & Run which is the largest fundraiser for the Rochester, NY chapter of the American Heart Association. First American has been participating since 2003 First American colleagues have donated over $15,000. Their contributions give additional funding to support life-saving research and education. Additionally, First American encourages heart health for all employees.  Each colleague has a stand-up desk, free access to fitness facilities and access to wellness programs. Many of our team members have a personal connection to healthcare and heart disease prevention:

"My role in healthcare is much more than providing financing. Every provider I work with, I feel directly tied to their staff, physicians, volunteers, patients, and communities. Their mission is my mission, and when we work on projects to improve care for their patients, I have the same dedication, care, and compassion as if we were working to improve care for my own family and community."

-Jessica Kerner, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina

My family is one of the many that have been affected by Heart Disease.  We have personally experienced the pain of losing someone we love, much earlier than they were supposed to go.  I am proud to work directly with healthcare providers that are able to prevent similar tragedies.   Our contribution to healthcare together means a brighter future for so many American families.”

-Kimberly Moore, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas

"Healthcare is an industry I feel extremely privileged to work in. I have the pleasure to work side by side with some of the best professionals in the nation, and their ultimate goal of providing care to their communities is my goal too. With my combined role as a finance professional, husband, and father, I know the importance of keeping myself and my family healthy. Every time I work with a provider, I think of the care we are providing to families, children, and people in the community, and I take great pride in being a part of it."

-Jim Tempio, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama

I have been involved in the Heart Walk since 1998. Two of my grandparents were taken by cardiovascular disease. Coordinating First American’s involvement in the Rochester Heart Walk & Run is a way to honor loved ones, support the community, and build camaraderie with my colleagues at First American.”

-Todd Buzard, Senior Vice President, Finance

Providers can encourage their patients, staff, and communities to make healthy changes to lower their risk of developing heart disease. Controlling and preventing risk factors is also important for people who already have heart disease. Here are some tips to lower risk:

  • Watch your weight.
  • Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.
  • Control your cholesterol and blood pressure.
  • If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.
  • Get active and eat healthy.
